Lecture by Stephen Morris on how the spontaneous emergence of order is a ubiquitous feature of natural processes. Rhythmic patterns self-organize out of apparently formless driving forces. We intuitively appreciate the syncopated regularity of patterns, which form the basis of much art and music. This lecture presents a selection of studies of such patterns, both from nature and in controlled experiments. Introduced by Russel Hartenberger Featuring the work of many people, including composer Jimmie Le Blanc. Thursday Dec 1, 2016, Faculty of Music, University of Toronto Part of the Jackman Institute of Humanities "Reich, Rhythm and Repetition: Patterns in Music, Speech and Science" symposium https://humanities.utoronto.ca/event_details/id= 2294
