After spending 4 years in the US, I came back to Morocco, to my hometown of Biougra. Familiar sounds I used to hear as a child still circulate around the streets and narrow alleys. Not much has changed. I felt a huge gap separating the two worlds in terms of time. This image is a representation of how time moves slowly in Morocco as opposed to the rapid pace of life in the US. It captures the push and pull between the past and the present in Morocco. Audio is de-noised a bit so it gets the hollow sound effect. The clouds reflect the changing outside world, while the voices and sounds represent continuity in the Moroccan way of life. A man selling fresh sardines every day with the same call "Huuut". The sound of a woman sweeping the street in front of her house every morning. Birds singing the same songs. The screech of the rooster. Each sound repeats at the same hour every day in a routine that hasn't changed since my childhood. There is a stubborn resistance to catching up with the pace of modernity, yet the embrace of modernity cannot be denied. With my sound and image creations, I invite you to step into a moment of unique appreciation of the images and sounds which surround us everyday, often outside our notice, get a fresh air in this world overly saturated with information.
